Telechelic systems of formula (II) with furan end gps. are new. R<1>, R<2> = H, 1-4C alkyl, halo, -OR (with R = alkyl or Ph) or Ph; R<3>=gp. of formula (i) or (ii) (with R<4> = as for R<1> and R<2>), Monp = a linear or branched polymer chain derived from ethylenic monomers, with a mol. wt. such that cpd. (I) has a mean Mn of 1000-4000. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (II) by radical polymerisation of ethylenic monomer(s) at elevated temp. in the presence of cpds. of formula (I) as C-C cleaving initiators.
