The device controls and/or monitors a h.f. surgical device with at least one h.f. generator which is suitable for monopolar, bipolar and/or quasi-bipolar cutting and/or coagulation. Different h.f. surgical instruments (1) can be connected to and operated by this device. The h.f. surgical instruments (1) have an electric or electronic coding device (C). Also, at least one electric or electronic decoder (D) is provided for the high frequency device to which one or more surgical instruments (1) are connected consecutively or simultaneously. The decoder (D) can be connected to the coding device (C) of the HF instrument (1) respectively connected to the device. The decoder (D) converts the coding into electric signals which are fed to control and monitoring devices of the surgical device to automatically configure the device to an operating mode corresponding to the coding.
