The system comprises a pump (10), a steering valve (12), a servo-motor (14) with two working chambers, and feed and return pipes (36,38). One or more non-return valves (42) are mounted in the feed pipe (20) between the pump and the feed and return pipes branching off from the steering valve. The non-return valve can be incorporated in the steering valve, or immediately adjacent to it and downstream of the feed pipe from the pump.
