The heat exchanger has a nest of ribbed (4) water tubes (2), whose one end (6) is tightly inserted into apertures (8) of a plastics bottom tube plate (10), forming a water box (14) with a plastics lid (12) by friction welding. A partition (16) on the lid divides the box into an inlet side (18) and an outlet side compartment (20). The first friction welding connection (40) is between the lid edge (42) and the bottom plate edge (44). A second such connection (32) is between the partition and the bottom plate with level differences between the connections. The level of the first friction welding connection matches that of the second connection in transition sections (38). In other sections the levels are different.
