A circuit arrangement in which the potential difference across a switching transistor 2 is used to determine the curtent flowing in the load circuit of the clocked switching transistor 2, thus eliminating the need for an additional shunt resistor. A preferred application is for a switched-mode power supply or a battery charger in which the switching transistor 2 is clocked with pulses of different lengths. The length of the pulses is controlled via a commercially available integrated circuit 1 which responds to variations in the potential difference and hence to the current in the load circuit. <IMAGE>
