In the method described, the engine output can be controlled by a first control unit (10). The brake power can be controlled by a second control unit (24). The two control units (10, 24) act in conjunction with each other to control or limit the vehicle speed. Based on the monitoring of at least one of the parameters engine rpm, vehicle speed, vehicle acceleration, fuel-injection rate and throttle-valve position, an assessment is made as to whether a decrease in engine output will be sufficient to maintain the speed at a target value. Optionally, the second control unit (24) increases the brake power. |
