1,164,388. Therapeutic animal extract. SHIONOGI & CO. Ltd. 8 June, 1967 [14 June, 1966], No. 26465/67. Heading A5B. A crystalline, sulphur-containing glyco-lipid is obtained by solvent extraction of animal tissue, especially brain tissue, e.g. with a lower alkanol, pyridine, dimethyl formamide or dimethyl sulphoxide. The extract is washed with a non-polar or slightly polar solvent, e.g. ether, acetone or petroleum ether and subsequently ether-washed with water or, alternatively and preferably, a solution of the crude extract in a suitable solvent e.g. a halogenated C 1-4 alkane- C 1-4 alkanol mixture is shaken with water, the aqueous layer is separated and the active substanced crystallised therefrom. It shows protective activity against bacterial infection and may be incorporated into conventional pharmaceutical forms, e.g. tablets. |
