In the production of acetylene and/or olefins by cracking hydrocarbons in a flame burning below the surface of the liquid hydrocarbons, in which the supply of oxygen is regulated by an oxygen valve coupled with an inversely functioning inert gas valve, the gas space above the liquid hydrocarbon in the reaction vessel is flushed throughout the whole of the ignition process with such an amount of inert gas that even if the whole of the oxygen supplied to the submerged burner passes through, the formation of an ignitable mixture is prevented. A volume of nitrogen of from 20-25 times that of the oxygen may be used for this purpose.
