Composition based on thermoplastic polymers, especially .alpha.-olefine polymers, such as polyethylene or ethylene copolymers, which contain, as degradationpromoting additives, a biodegradable substance, an iron compound which is soluble in the composition and may be a complex, an oxidizable substance having one or more double bonds and selected from fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters and, if appropriate, as a catalyst, a further compound of a transition metal other than iron, show a substantially improved degradability under the action of heat and/or ultraviolet light and/or sunlight and/or under composting conditions.
