In redn. of the viscosity of heavy oil residues, the residue is treated at high temp., for a time equiv. to 250-2500 equiv. reaction time (FRT) secs. at 427 deg.C, with a H donor solvent comprising a fuel oil from steam-cracking, with a content of aromatic cpds. above 90%, and with at least 40% of the aromatic cpds. contg. hydroaromatic components. The heavy oil residue, mixed with the solvent, is pref. subjected to visbreaking at a throughput level of 600-1800 FRT. The H donor solvent comprises more than 93% of aromatic prods., at least 50% of which are hydroaromatic. The amt. of solvent is 5-30 (10-25) pts. w.r.t. 100 pts. of residue. After the visbreaking process, the fraction distilling at 260-340 (280-320) deg.C, is recovered, partly hydrogenated, and recycled, as H donor solvent, to the heavy oil residue subjected to visbreaking. ADVANTAGE - Coke formation is greatly reduced. A smaller amt. of liquefier has to be mixed with the residue tar to give an acceptable fuel. |
