1,205,562. Liquid-liquid extraction; treating gases with liquids. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 28 Sept., 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 29124/66. Headings B1F and B1R. Extraction apparatus comprises a charged nozzle 4, Fig. 1, and a receiving funnel 5 in a cell casing 1, a continuous phase, e.g. toluene, being supplied at 2 and discharged at 3. A disperse phase, e.g. water, is dropped via the nozzle and accelerated, by the charge imparted to it, towards the funnel. The water removes, e.g. benzoic acid in the toluene. A second embodiment includes a bank of nozzles, formed as by punching a sheet or by insertion into a drilled plate; and a lower plate electrode. A third embodiment for removing, e.g. sulphur dioxide from air comprises a positively charged bank of nozzles 25, Fig. 3, supplied via an inlet 21 with water, a positively charged tray 29, earthed trays 26, 28, and a negatively charged tray 27. The disperse phase passes from tray to tray and leaves via an outlet 22, while the continuous phase passes up the column from inlet 23 and out at 24. Spaced conducting Raschig rings may be used in place of trays. |
