1,205,399. Production of unsaturated nitriles. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 22 Nov., 1968 [8 Dec., 1967], No. 55950/67. Heading C2C. Unsaturated nitriles are obtained by reacting a primary alcohol RCH 2 OH with a nitrile R<SP>1</SP>CH 2 CN, wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> represent hydrogen atoms, or an alkyl, aryl or alkaryl group, at elevated temperature in the presence of oxygen and a catalyst comprising a metal of Group IB of the Periodic Table carried on a basic support. The preferred starting materials are methanol and acetonitrile to give acrylonitrile and the reaction may be effected at 350-600‹ C. The molar ratio of the alcohol to the nitrile is suitably 4:1 to 1:5 and the molar ratio of the oxygen to the alcohol is suitably 1:1.25 to 1: 5. Suitable catalyst supports include silica gel, γ-alumina, magnesium oxide and silica/alumina, which may have been treated with a basic compound of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. |
