The invention relates to a mobile instrument and the associated process enabling the digitizer system to determine the position and orientation of this instrument. The mobile instrument includes two parallel coils whose centres are offset in such as way as to specify its orientation relative to the axis of one of the said coils, the coil (1) whose axis is the orientation reference being used to determine the origin and the other coil (2) being used to determine the end of the orientation vector, one of the positions thus determined being at the same time the position of the said mobile instrument. By virtue of its orientation, this mobile instrument is particularly suitable for any computer-aided graphic art applications. The graphical interfaces of general use can benefit therefrom by adding to the point and click concepts, a third orient concept which is just as natural as the others. <IMAGE>
