The invention relates to a compound of the formula <IMAGE> in substantially the cis-(4R,6S) form and wherein R7 and R6 are each independently hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl or phenyl, which may be optionally substituted with C1-4 alkyl, halogen, C1-4 alkoxy or trifluoromethyl; R9 and R10 are each, taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl or cycloheptyl; and n is zero or 1. The invention further relates to the process which uses formula IX for the preparation of an aldehyde of the formula <IMAGE> in substantially the cis-(4R,6S) form, wherein R12 is hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl or a metal cation. The compounds are useful as intermediates in the preparation of antihypercholesterolaemic tetrazol compounds.
