Process for the treatment of urban or industrial residual sludge by anaerobic digestion, characterised in that it is performed in two steps in two different reactors: the first step forming a thermophilic anaerobic digestion carried out at a temperature of the order of 50 to 60 DEG C and a residence time in the first reactor of 2 to 10 days, and the second step being a mesophilic anaerobic digestion performed at a temperature of the order of 35 DEG C and a residence time in the second reactor of 8 to 15 days.
