The method according to the invention is intended to locate stolen vehicles. Respective memories of transmission stations (S3) distributed over a predetermined region are updated so as to store stolen vehicle codes. Each of a plurality of location devices (D1, D2, D3) is loaded over a radio channel with these stolen vehicle codes when it is in proximity to one of the transmission stations (S3). A location device (D1, D2, D3) arranged in a surveillance vehicle (V1, V2, V3) following a route in the region receives vehicle identification codes transmitted by respective transmission circuits to the vehicles. In the locating device (D1, D2, D3), a positive comparison between one of the said vehicle identification codes received and one of the said stolen vehicle codes loaded means that a stolen vehicle is located as being close to the locating device. A circuit for transmission to a vehicle has a short range so that location of a vehicle is all the more precise. <IMAGE>
