The HF generator has an amplifier circuit (16) with a feedback network (26) between its output and input. The amplifier circuit (16) uses a power MOSFET (38) supplied with positive and negative pulses (52,54) in alternation, at its gate (36), for initiating periodic conduction of the MOSFET (36). Pref. the ignition and extinction voltage pulses (52,54) fed to the MOSFET gate (36) have an amplitude which is a multiple of the gate threshold voltage of the power MOSFET (38), each pref. comprising needle pulses obtained by differentiating a rectangular voltage signal. ADVANTAGE - Provides HF energy with variable pulse ratio.
