The present invention is a fusion protein that combines select portions of a Tumor Necrosis Factor ("TNF") and an Interleukin-1 beta ("IL-1 beta ") to create a new protein that can be used to reduce the ill effects of radiation therapy and that selectively reduces the growth of cancer cells in a human. In particular, the present invention provides a fusion protein comprising IL-1 beta (163-171) nonapeptide and hTNF alpha by using recombinant DNA techniques to assemble the useful expression vector.
