The invention relates to a local area computer network which has as network components a central or main computer (for example server), distribution components (for example patch panels) and connection components (connection sockets), which are connected to one another by copper cables. In order to facilitate or effect the structure of such a network as a plug-in unit, the patch panels with the plug sockets are designed as a closed module according to Category 5, two mutually assigned plug sockets of the patch panels always being directly connected to one another. In addition, homogeneous flexible data cables of Category 5 having up to 4 x 2 paired cores are used in the entire network, and the connecting cables between all the components are designed as cable segments.
