A hydrodynamic device, arranged in the cooling-water circuit of an i.c. engine to generate heat for a motor vehicle, has stator blade wheel 9, and rotor blade wheel 8 drive-connectable to engine-driven shaft 3, via electromagnetic clutch 10, 11, 12, 16, 16a, in dependence on a temperature of a medium to be monitored, to heat the water by kinetic energy. Clutch 12 is at least partially in water space 1a of the device, and has preferably-permanent magnet 10 to keep female taper 16a of rotor 17, 8 spaced from shaft-driven male taper 16. Electromagnet 11 moves the female taper into contact with the male to drive the rotor. The device is integrated with the water pump having impeller 5 in housing 6. <IMAGE>
