Swimming pools are provided with a child safety means, in that the covering, comprising a covering sheet, is fitted such that it projects beyond the pool border and hangs down on the outer wall. Integrated into said covering sheet or in the border region thereof is a tensioning strap which is fitted with a safety clasp such that, after the tensioning strap has been tensioned, unintentional opening of the safety clasp is not possible. The border of the swimming pool is stabilized by a handrail or the like, with the result that it can reliably absorb the tensioning forces of the tensioning strap. Consequently, such a swimming pool is secured even if it is unsupervised over a period of some days, for example in a weekend house. After the covering sheet has been fitted and braced with the aid of a tensioning strap, a child of up to six years old can walk on the covering sheet without there being any risk of drowning or the like.
