The present invention provides a device which renders it possible for a plurality of markings to be applied at a previously fixed distance from a reference point in such a way that each marking lies on a straight line which is fixed by one of the markings and the reference point and is aligned with respect to the horizontal. By means of its plurality of bores, whose centres are at the same distance from one another, which are arranged symmetrically about a reference bore and which with reference to their centres lie on a straight line which passes through the reference bore and is parallel to a first edge, this device permits the precise marking of appropriate points at which retaining devices, e.g. nails or screws for holding picture frames, are applied. Exact horizontal alignment of the markings is possible by means of the spirit level, which is mounted below the bores parallel to the lower horizontal edge. By providing a handle on the device, it is possible to apply the latter with one hand and to use the second hand to apply the appropriate markings, e.g. by means of a pencil which is guided through the bores.
