A system for controlling a relational data base stored in a first storage unit (11) controlled in accordance with a first, relational access logic and including at least one series of records. Each record is combined with an object having at least one variable and at least one method for affecting the value of at least one such variable, and data retrieval and/or alteration is performed only on said objects in accordance with a second, object-oriented access logic. Said system includes a second storage unit (15) for temporarily storing objects; a control unit (14) including a unit (113) for automatically generating commands for said data base in accordance with said first access logic and on the basis of commands corresponding to said second access logic; and a unit (16) for transferring data back and forth between said first (11) and second (15) storage units under the control of said automatic command generator unit (113) so as to limit the number of times said first storage unit is accessed.
