<p>An electronic terminal (1) of the type employing a card reading device (12) mounted within the interior thereof accessible through an input port (10) formed in a wall (3) of the terminal (1). A shield (15) formed of an elastomeric material is mounted adjacent the input port (10) of the card reader (12) to prevent the entrance of debris into the interior (7) of the terminal (1). The shield (15) provides at least two opposing movable overlapping flaps (28, 29) extending over the card reader input port (10). The flaps (28, 29) are readily flexible to allow a card (11) to slide therebetween, and automatically flex back to an overlapping closed position when the card (11) is withdrawn. Locator pins (76) and mating holes (77) are provided in said flaps (24, 29) to assure a consistent return to the closed and sealed position. In one embodiment, the shield (80) is made from two half sections (81, 82) which may be either separated or connected via a flexible bridge (85).</p> |
