Easels have served hitherto merely for setting the height and fixing of the painting ground by clamping the same in relation to the working position of the artist. The new easel permits, over and above this fixed adjustment of the working height of the painting ground, a high degree of mobility, i.e. variability of the position of the painting ground in relation to that of the artist. Moreover, individual easels of this type can be used to build up, in a modular construction, large-size easels in principle of the same type. This new type of easel constitutes a universal working framework in respect of its extendibility and mobility. By providing a plate with nubs in accordance with a specific pattern, a surface is produced onto which in particular wedge frames in the commercially available side widths can be clamped. The height positioning of the painting ground is achieved by simply inserting the clamped-on wedge frame in a different position. The same effects are achieved by providing the surface of the plate with at least triangular holes and corresponding clamping-on aids; magnetisable plate surfaces forming a unit with appropriate clamping-on aids are also suitable; plates provided with needles serve the same purpose.
