A control unit for a motor vehicle for carrying out main functions while the ignition is switched on and for carrying out secondary functions while the ignition is switched off has a mode changeover device (20) for switching over the device to optimum operation in order to carry out main functions when the ignition is switched on and, in contrast, to switch it over, when the ignition is switched off, to minimum current consumption when carrying out secondary functions. In the mode for carrying out main functions, the CPU (12) is clocked for example with 16 MHz and the output stages (17) of the control unit (10) are switched off, while in the mode for carrying out the secondary functions the clock frequency is for example 100 kHz and at least some of the output stages are switched off. <IMAGE>
