The invention relates to an apparatus for tying a weldable band (1) around packages, in which the package (P) is moved against a tensioned band strand (200), the band (1) is laid around the package as a result of a further movement of the package and, after a closing position is reached, elements of a welding apparatus (12) close, by means of which elements, first, the band is welded to the package and, second, the band strand is remade and tensioned by welding the two band ends obtained. The apparatus comprises the following details: - two band-strand tautening rollers (8, 8') which are vertically adjustable relative to the package and between which the band strand (200) can be tensioned, - band brakes (4), - at least two stock rolls (15, 15'), from which band (1) can be unrolled and each of which is assigned to a band-strand tautening roller, - a vertically adjustable crosshead (13) which carries the said elements of the welding apparatus (12), - and deflecting and guiding rollers (14, 10) for generating a continuous band pull from the stock rolls up to the band-strand tautening rollers. At least one band-strand tautening roller (8; 8') is preceded by a band brake (4) of adjustable braking force. <IMAGE>
