A reflex pulse direct from a transmitter to a photodiode (1) produces a photocurrent which is low-pass filtered (2) for input to a wideband low-noise amplifier (3) and threshold comparator (4). The varying output pulse widths and leading-edge sepns. are evaulated by timers (7-9) and stored in the memory of the computer (6). The measurement and correction data are converted into a true pulse propagation time from which the distance of the object is deduced. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. in traffic control, forestry and machine construction, precision of measurement is increased without prolongation of measurement time.
