A charging method and a charging device are described for charging a battery having an electrolyte which is free of water, for example a lithium primary battery which has a positive terminal active material, a negative terminal active material made of light alloy, and an electrolyte which is free of water. The charging is carried out using a predetermined electrical current per unit time of 2 mu C to 5 mC only when the remaining capacity of the battery having an electrolyte which is free of water is in the range from 5 to 95%.
