A speed change control method for an automatic transmission is provided which can reduce not only shift shock but also time required for shifting. Skipping shift-down from a first gear to a second gear is performed via a third gear which is not used in a normal shifting. When the deviation (NTM-Nt) between the current number of turbine revolutions NT and the number of synchronized revolutions NTM in relation to the third speed gear is judged to have become smaller than a threshold value ΔNFM during shifting from the first gear to the third gear, a control for releasing a frictional engagement element (23) corresponding to a releasing side speed change element of the third gear is started prior to the establishment of the third gear, whereby a period of time required for establishing the third gear is reduced, reduction of shift shock and time required for shifting thereby being reduced.
|
