A magnetooptical recording device has the following: an objective lens (9) for focusing a light beam onto a magnetooptical recording medium (11) and a pair of magnets (10, 10'), which are arranged on in each case one of the sides of the magnetooptical recording medium and apply a writing magnetic field to the illuminated region and an initialising magnetic field to the other regions. Furthermore, the magnets are arranged such that the line which goes from the N pole to the S pole in each magnet lies virtually parallel to the optical recording medium and these lines are directed counter to each other. This arrangement makes it possible to utilize fully the magnetic fluxes of the magnets, as a result of which they can be miniaturised and the device, which permits overwriting by means of light modulation, can be designed to be compact, in particular, flat. <IMAGE>
