Electrolysis of a salt solution and electrolytic cell suitable therefor

The invention relates to a method for electrolysing a salt solution (sodium chloride solution, saline solution), use being made of a gas electrode, and to an electrolytic cell suitable therefor, in which a gas electrode which is permeable to gas and liquid is arranged in the cathode compartment in contact with the ion exchanger membrane. The sodium hydroxide formed on the electrode substance of the gas electrode readily passes through the gas electrode and is recovered (isolated) from the cathode compartment. Within the ion exchanger membrane, no sodium hydroxide is formed, so that any ingress of sodium hydroxide into the anode compartment is thereby prevented.
