For the purpose of rapid measurement of workpieces having shaped elements of known geometry in an arbitrary spatial orientation, the shaped elements are scanned on a coordinate measuring apparatus, which is aligned with a measuring contact probe, along a desired track which is computed such that the contact ball of the contact probe remains permanently in contact with the surface of the workpiece. The control system used for this purpose in the coordinate measuring apparatus monitors the permissible measurement range of the contact probe and corrects the effects of the bending of the probe on the measurement result.
