Comprises exposing one portion of each of the batteries to a solution of denatonium benzoate, the solution having a concentration in the range of 0.25% to 2.5% weight by volume, and drying the batteries so as to form a dried coating of denatonium benzoate on the batteries. In a preferred embodiment one side of each of the batteries is exposed to the denatonium benzoate solution and the batteries are transferred to a drying chamber after exposure to the solution of denatonium benzoate with the air temperature in the drying chamber being elevated to a temperature in the range 100 to 150 DEG C.
