1,110,629. Detecting leaks. AMP Inc. Sept.22, 1966 [Oct. 11, 1965], No.42302/66. Heading G1S. In a method of testing the fluid-tightness of an electrical connector housing 1 having an insert 4 provided with through apertures 6, 8, one end of each aperture is sealed by a plug 62 and fluidpressure is introduced at the other end of the aperture, such that escape of fluid from the aperture is determined by detector means. The insert 4 is formed of two materials bonded at the interface 16a, 16b. The test apparatus comprises spool valves 22a, 22b, each having a body 26, a chamber 28 and a movable spool 40, the valve 22a having an inlet 30 for compressed air. Each valve has a conduit 52 for connection to one of the openings 6, 8 and a conduit 64 for submersion in a water tank 66. In operation, the push-button 50 of valve 22a is depressed so that compressed air from inlet 30 flows past face 42 of the valve spool, through port 46, conduit 52 and through opening 8 of the insert 4. If the interface 16a is leaking, the compressed air reaches opening 6, and flows along a further conduit 42 to valve 22b, past face 44 of the valve spool and through conduit 64 into the water tank 66 for detection. Leakage between openings 6, 8 and the exterior of the shell 2 can be tested by submerging in water the housing 1 with the plug 62 thereon, and pressing both pushbuttons 50. Apparatus is described for testing twenty housings simultaneously. |
