The sudden increase in volume of a green carbonaceous shaped body made from petroleum coke, during graphitization thereof (termed "puffing") is inhibited by mixing with the coke used to form the body, a fluoride selected from calcium, magnesium, strontium and barium fluorides and mixtures thereof, and thereafter forming the mixture into the required shape and baking and graphitizing, i.e. heating to temperatures in excess of 1400 DEG C., the body. Calcined petroleum coke and raw petroleum coke may be employed and may be mixed with a carbonaceous binder in addition to the fluoride. Binders specified are coal tar pitches, petroleum asphalts and thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde, phenol-benzaldehyde, furfural and epoxy resins. Raw petroleum coke may be mixed with a plasticizing agent in addition to the fluoride. Before mixing with the fluoride and binder raw petroleum coke may be heated, formed and milled, or, mixed with a plasticizer, formed, heated and comminuted, or, mixed with a binder, formed, baked and comminuted. |
