An N6 adenosine compound of the formula: (see formula I) wherein R = (see formula II) or (see formula III) and R1 an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms. Compounds according to the invention are A1 adenosine receptor agonists and may therefore be used as .beta.-blockers and antiarrhythmic agents.
