The invention relates to a method for automatically controlling the diaphragm of an image-formation device, the image-formation device including a lens (15) with variable diaphragm (17), controlled by a control signal (SF, TF, +D, -D), characterised in that it includes the following steps: a) generating digital image data representing at least a part of the image, b) transforming the digital image data using a discrete cosine transform, in order to produce transformed coefficients representing spatial frequencies of the image, c) generating a said control signal (SF, TF, +D, -D) from the said transformed coefficients. <IMAGE>
