The invention relates to a hydrodynamic braking device, in particular for a training apparatus, having two cylinders (2, 3) in which a respective piston (23, 33) with a piston rod (25, 35) is guided in an axially displaceable manner, the piston rods (25, 35) being guided out of the cylinders (2, 3) in a sealing manner, and the cylinders (2, 3) being connectable in such a manner to each other that, when one piston (23, 33) is pushed in, the other piston (33, 23) can be pushed out due to the fact that hydraulic fluid can be displaced out of the first cylinder (2) through at least one overflow duct (4, 5) and can be introduced into the second cylinder (3) and vice versa, and an adjustable throttle (41, 51) being arranged in the overflow duct (4, 5) for the purpose of adjusting the flow resistance and thus the braking action of the braking device (1). The braking device according to the invention is characterised in that - a first overflow duct (4) is provided to conduct the hydraulic fluid from the first cylinder (2) to the second cylinder (3), and a second overflow duct (5) is provided to conduct the hydraulic fluid from the second cylinder (3) to the first cylinder (2), - in each overflow duct (4, 5), at least one nonreturn valve (40, 50) is arranged for the purpose of establishing the direction of flow of the hydraulic fluid, and - the openings of the two overflow ducts (4, 5) into each of the two cylinders (2, 3) [lacuna] at cylinder regions positioned remote from one another ...
