The invention relates to a drive device for the grippers on weaving machines, consisting of a rack mechanism with a rack (11, 12) and with a driving wheel (21, 22), of a drive means (3) for the driving wheel (21, 22) with a memory (31) for the movement program of the gripper rods and with gear elements (31 to 37), and of an energy store (41) on one of the gear elements (31 to 37) of the drive means (3), with a first support bearing (41a) on one gear element and with a second support bearing (b) on another machine element. The aim of reducing the sag of the gear as a result of the inertia forces, the energy store (4) is designed as a torsion spring (41), a first support bearing (41a) of which is arranged on the axis of a gear element (34, 35, 36, 37) and is fastened rigidly there and the relaxed position of which is provided approximately in the middle of the drive stroke.
