In a device for controlling the speed of a motor vehicle, a power controller for the internal combustion engine of the motor vehicle being adjustable by an electric motor via a switchable clutch, the electric motor receiving from a control unit the voltage required for adjusting the power controller for the respective speed to be maintained and the clutch being capable of being switched with the aid of an electromagnet in such a way that when the device for controlling the speed is not activated the motor is disconnected from the power controller, a first controllable switch is arranged between one pole of the operating voltage source and the electromagnet and a second controllable switch is arranged between the other pole of the operating voltage source and the electromagnet, which switches can be switched into the conductive state with the aid of a controller element.
