1,219,482. Sealed cell. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 16 Sept., 1968 [2 Oct., 1967; 17 Nov., 1967], No. 44000/68. Heading H1B. A sealed cell, particularly a nickel cadmium alkaline battery, Fig. 1, has disposed therein an electrochemical element 6 which enables ionization and generation of oxygen caused by overcharging to take place cyclically and whose internal resistance depends on the pressure of oxygen, and comprises an oxygen ionizing electrode 8 having a hydrogen overvoltage less than or equal to that of the negative cadmium electrode 4 to which it is connected, and an oxygen generating electrode 7 having an oxygen overvoltage greater than or equal to that of the positive nickel oxide electrode 3 to which it is connected. An ion-conductive separator 9 interposed between electrodes 7 and 8 through which OH- ions pass, dips in the aqueous KOH electrolyte. Electrodes 7 and 8 may be made from nickel, carbon or stainless steel, and electrode 8 may be subjected to a waterproofing treatment particularly with a fluorine-containing synthetic resin and may have at least one catalyst selected from Ag, Pd, Pt or Au. The electrochemical element may be integrally connected to a conventional vent plug (Fig. 6, not shown). |
