Noise from a selective print head 17 is reduced by so arranging an edge 18a of the paper exit slot of the machine housing (with respect to both the paper discharge rollers 31, 32 and an external paper tray 19) that the paper bears against said edge, thereby utilizing the paper itself to acoustically isolate the print head from the exterior of the casing. To ensure satisfactory transport of the paper while preventing "set-off" of ink from the printed paper, the drive roller (31) of said pair of discharge rollers (31, 32) is made of high friction material (rubber) and the idler roller (32) of the pair is made of ink resistant material (synthetic resin), and the leading end of a sheet (P) is guided so as to be abutted against the drive roller (31) earlier than the driven roller (32). The upper discharge roller 31 is resiliently mounted to an openable part of the machine housing, and the lower roller 32 is mounted on a resiliently pivotable carrier 34 which is biassed to engage a drive wheel 33 against the platen. <IMAGE>
