This invention is directed to compositions and methods containing physiologically stable compounds of butyric acid salts, derivatives of butyric acid, or combinations thereof, for the treatment of neoplastic and other diseases and disorders including leukemias, lymphomas, sarcomas, carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, neural cell tumors, seminomas, melanomas, neuroblastomas, germ cell tumors, undifferentiated tumors, mixed cell tumors, metastatic neoplasias, neoplasias derived from pathogenic infections and other malignancies. Butyric acid derivatives include analogs homologs including next adjacent homologs and compounds based on a part of the butyric acid moiety. These compositions are useful prophylactically and as a treatment for directly eliminating transformed cells by inducing cellular differentiation. These same compounds also indirectly eliminate transformed cells by reducing the expression of MHC and non-MHC antigens of the surface of transformed cells which enhances their identification and subsequent removal by the patient's immune system. In addition, these compositions are useful for decreasing multi-drug resistance activity of the cell which, in conjunction with conventional chemotherapy, results in greater concentrations of chemotherapeutic agents within the cell, thereby enhancing there effectiveness, and for the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal disorders such as colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.
