The fluid (200) is illuminated by illuminating system (10, 16), and an image (202, 204, 212, 214) formed of the interior of the fluid (200). The image (202, 204, 212, 214) is then detected by a detecting system (20, 72, 74), and processed to determine the size, shape, etc. of particulates within the fluid (200).
