A device (40) according to the invention includes a shaft (13d) and an inverted needle (22d) joined to the shaft. Two ends of a length of suture material (35) are attached at or near a sharpened proximal tip (25d) on the needle. The device may include a movable shield (43) that is slidable to alternately cover and expose the sharpened tip of the needle. This shield may include a blunt distal end and an inclined proximal surface (80) to assist the surgeon in guiding the hook into and out of the body cavity. The device may be provided with a visual and tactile indicator (65) on one side of the device to assist the user in the threading and removing the suture material into and out of a selected side of the hook. |
