The novel 1,2-bisketene of Formula I: wherein: R<1> is SiR<3>R<4>R<5>; R<2> is selected from the group comprising SiR<3>R<4>R<5>, hydrogen, methyl, a substituted or unsubstituted C2-20inear or branched alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted C6-20 aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted C5-20 cycloalkyl group and a halogen; and each of R<3>, R<4> and R<5> are the same or different and are selected from the group comprising hydrogen, methyl, a substituted or unsubstituted C2-20 linear or branched alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted C6-20 aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted C7-20 aralkyl group and substituted or unsubstituted a C5-20 cycloalkyl group, is useful in e.g. preparing a succinate ester, or in reacting with a polyfunctional alcohol or ester to produce a polyester or polyamide.
