In a method for monitoring the battery of a hybrid vehicle, the charge level of the battery 1 is determined by means of balancing 5.1 the charge quantities extracted and supplied, and is indicated 6 to the driver. Because of the inaccuracy of the charge balancing, resetting of the balancing at a reliable limit value QE must be carried out from time to time. In order to monitor the battery charge level, an error variable is calculated 8 in parallel which indicates a discrepancy between the indicated charge level and the actual charge level, and the vehicle operator is provided with an indication 10 if this variable exceeds a maximum value.
