摘要 PURPOSE:To uniformly and thinly produce an orienting film with high efficiency without requiring rubbing by using a monomolecular film of a specified silane surfactant formed by chemical adsorption on an electrode optionally with an arbitrary thin film in-between as a liq. crystal orienting film. CONSTITUTION:A monomolecular film of a silane surfactant formed by chemical adsorption on an electrode optionally with an arbitrary thin film in-between is used as a liq. crystal orienting film. The silane surfactant is represented by the formula [where each of Y, Z, A and M is H or F and (n) is an integer of 1-7]. This monomolecular film has a more satisfactory oriented state than a monomolecular film of a silane surfactant having <8 carbon atoms and highly orients a liq. crystal. Since the silane surfactant represented by the formula has 8 carbon atoms and is not long, it has a high degree of freedom, fits well to injected liq. crystal molecules and easily attains uniform orientation. Since the liq. crystal anchoring strength of the surface of the orienting film is low, response speed is increased and bistability can be satisfactorily ensured.
