AUXILIARY DATA STORAGE SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR STORAGE AND RECOVERY OF DATA FILE

PURPOSE: To improve the data throughput and the reliability in data recovery by using the plural detachable volumes of a magnetic tape device as arrangement for storing data. CONSTITUTION: A host computer 12 can perform access through a memory control mechanism 24 to one of magnetic tape devices 14-22. Detachable volumes 26 are loaded to the magnetic tape devices 14-22 by an access mechanism device 30. Next, the respective volumes 26 are accessed at the equal logical position for storing or retrieving a data file. In response to access, the data in the file are started from the equal position of the respective volumes 26 and striped into the arrangement of volumes 26 by a packet. When the number of packets can not be equally divided by the number of volumes, a null mark is striped to the volume 26 to receive a little packets. This mark maintains the equal logical position for the start of the next file.
